From 1983 to 2014, universal mobile phone subscriptions grew from non-existent to over 7 billion, reaching 100 per cent of the global population, even the most economically challenged. But are these cellphones we cherish so much really harming us?
According to a new study, Radiation emitted from our cellphones can lead to various health risks including the infamous Cancer, due to metabolic imbalance in users. Dr. Igor Yakymenko from the The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine suggests that cellphone use for 20 minutes a day for five years can boost the risk of one type of brain tumor by three times, while using a cellphone for an hour a day for four years and increase the risk of certain tumors by three to five times. He also noted that brain and related cancers can take as many as 30 years to develop.
In 2011, even the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer said cellphone usage is “possibly carcinogenic” after a review of all the possible scientific evidence on the topic.
“Putting it bluntly they are damaging the living cells in our bodies and killing many of us prematurely,” said Dr. Martin Blank, from the Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics at Columbia University.
“We have created something that is harming us, and it is getting out of control. Before Edison’s light bulb there was very little electromagnetic radiation in our environment. The levels today are very many times higher than natural background levels, and are growing rapidly because of all the new devices that emit this radiation.”
It is worth noting that even though these types of studies linking Cellphone use to Cancer are not new, scientists have yet to prove without a doubt as to whether cellphone use can cause Cancer or not. To be honest, I can’t survive without my cellphone, Cancer or not!
